The shot that shook the Earth, is the one that came from
Lexington and Concord, the Revolution had begun
The colonists were sick of it, the laws and the taxes
They could no longer sit back and relax
And so they rebelled, at first mere terrorists
But gained a purpose, Liberty, it made them heroic
“Give me liberty, or give me death!”
Patrick Henry’s famous words solidified the steps
Upon which we rose to combat Mother Britain
Loyalists thought: We bit the hand that fed us and made her the villain
But many wondered would it only lead to senseless killing?
A minority war, how could they have the audacity?
Questioning their mental capacities…
But then we heard the shot that shook the Earth
And with that shot, Revolution was given birth
A war of beliefs, even slaves were tested
Toward their futures they made investments
Into the armies they were drafted
Both sides had arguments well-crafted
Both offered freedom in exchange for service
Could anyone have sung a song that sounded more perfect?
Washington faced Cornwallis
Arnold’s defeat at Valcour Island
The capture of Fort Ticonderoga
The campaign of Saratoga
“These are the times that try men’s souls”
Especially when facing Hessians or the Iroquois
Benedict Arnold’s traitorous acts
Switching sides just to save his back, murdering pacts
From NJ to NY
And all of the people who fought hard in Philadelphia, especially Brandywine
The crossing of the Delaware, the battle of Valley Forge
Until France and Spain joined our side in the war
And then the conflict took to the high seas
We had the aid of France, who helped with their navy
The shot that shook the Earth is the one that started it all
From Lexington and Concord, to Yorktown and Cornwallis’ fall
The Treaty of Paris of 1783
Paved the way for the home of the brave, the land of the free
