We pay homage to those who came before us
And laid the groundwork for us to flourish
Constant inspiration from the bars they said
Give the flowers to them whether they’re alive or dead
I owe a lot of my style to Kweli and Kanye
Common, Lupe, and Yasiin Bey
Mix that with Maya Angelou and Lauryn Hill
And my poetry was more than a thrill, it was a passion
Even if I don’t agree with every action
This poet’s society remains my faction
The Roots of my inspiration, my foundation
Untethered spirits in this fast food nation
When I was a kid I used to struggle for acceptance
Then I turned Fresh Prince and found my independence
I carry on for the spirits of those who left
And pay respect as I further my steps
